Happiness is a by-product of duty.
sukhasya mūlaṃ dharmaḥ। Dharma, righteous duty, is the very root of happiness. Chase pleasure directly and it thins out. Satisfaction is downstream of obligations kept. Audit any joy that requires a promise broken to survive: it will not last.
Virtue has an operating budget.
dharmasya mūlam arthaḥ। Only through wealth does righteous conduct become possible. Moral capacity is materially bounded. Before demanding ethics from people you have kept broke, fund them; most character failures inside institutions are budget failures in disguise.
Rule yourself before you rule anything.
rājyamūlam indriyajamaḥ। The state advances through victory over the senses. Appetite is the first governance failure. A leader who cannot refuse himself a drink, a flattery, a purchase, will not refuse his officials either. Self-command precedes command.
Humility is the muscle behind restraint.
indriyajayasya mūlaṃ vinayaḥ। Victory over the senses is possible only when one possesses the wealth of humility. Self-control is not willpower alone; it needs the humility to accept correction. The arrogant cannot restrain themselves because they cannot admit they were wrong in time.
Serve someone older than your ego.
vinayasya mūlaṃ vṛddhopasevā। Humility awakens only through service to elders. Deference is learned by doing, not deciding. Spend real time serving people who outrank you in experience and cannot pay you back; that friction is what sands down arrogance.
Proximity to experience beats reading about it.
vṛddhasevayā vijñānat। From service to elders one gains true knowledge. Tacit knowledge does not survive being written down. Sit close to people who have already failed at what you are attempting; that transfer happens in service, not in seminars.
Earn the seat you already occupy.
vijñānenātmānaṃ sampādayet। Through true knowledge the ruler should make himself fit for the role. Position is granted; competence is manufactured. Treat knowledge as the tool that retrofits you for authority you already hold, not as decoration you collect after arriving.
Clear duty is the cheapest self-control.
sampāditātmā jitātmā bhavati। Only the ruler who knows his own duties becomes master of his senses. You do not resist temptation by force; you resist it by having something specific to protect. Name your obligations precisely and most distractions lose their argument.
Self-command compounds into everything else.
jitātmā sarvārthai saṃyujyeta। The person who keeps the senses in check obtains every kind of wealth. Restraint is not deprivation, it is capital. Every impulse you decline preserves money, time and reputation that later buy things impulse never could.
A solvent center pays the whole periphery.
arthasampat prakṛtisampadaṃ karoti। When the ruler is prosperous, the people become prosperous too. Prosperity at the top is only defensible if it flows outward. Test any leadership's wealth by whether the people under it got richer, not by how rich the leadership looks.
Rich citizens make rulers optional.
prakṛtisampadā hy anāyakam api rājyaṃ nīyate। When the people are prosperous, the realm runs even without a ruler. The real test of a system is whether it survives its leader's absence. If everything stalls when one person leaves, you built a court, not an institution.
Public anger outranks every other kind.
prakṛtikopaḥ sarvakopebhyo garīyān। The anger of the people is more terrible than any other anger. You can absorb a rival's fury or a boss's; you cannot absorb your base's. Track the mood of people who merely tolerate you, because withdrawal of tolerance is the threat.
Be competent, then hire competence.
sampaddyātmānam avicchet sahāyavān। The ruler should make himself capable and then govern with the help of capable assistants. Delegation without personal competence is abdication. Earn the ability to judge the work first; only then can you tell a good assistant from a confident one.
Solo decisions are usually late decisions.
na sahāyasya mantraniścayaḥ। Without helpers, a ruler cannot arrive at any decision. Isolation degrades judgement before it degrades information. Build a small group licensed to contradict you, and route every consequential call through it before it hardens.
One wheel does not move the chariot.
naikaṃ cakraṃ paribhramayati। A single wheel cannot make a chariot move. Heroic individual effort is structurally incomplete. Where a task needs two forces to stay upright, adding more effort to one side just makes it spin faster in place.
Loyalty is only measured in the bad quarter.
sahāyaḥ samasukhaduḥkhaḥ। A true helper is one who stands with you equally in comfort and in hardship. Everyone is an ally during a good year. Grade your circle by who stayed useful when supporting you cost them something, and promote accordingly.
Drop your pride before the hard problem.
mānī pratimānīnām ātmani dvitīyaṃ mantram utpādayet। A proud ruler facing tangled problems should set pride aside and reach conclusions through impartial deliberation. Pride is affordable on easy questions and ruinous on hard ones. When a problem resists you, deliberately generate a second opinion of your own and argue against yourself first.
Affection is not a qualification.
avinītaṃ snehamātreṇa na mantre kurvīta। Do not admit an ill-conducted person into your counsels merely out of affection. The commonest governance failure is putting someone in the room because you like them. Separate the people you love from the people you consult; keep both, mix neither.
Hire the listener, not the loudest.
śrutavantam upadhāśuddhaṃ mantriṇaṃ kurvīta। A ruler should make his minister only a person who listens well and thinks at a high level. Two filters for any advisory hire: does he actually absorb what he is told, and has he been tested under temptation? Fluency without either is expensive noise.
Every project starts as a conversation.
mantramūlāḥ sarvārambhāḥ। All undertakings begin from deliberation and counsel. Quality of outcome is capped by quality of the first discussion. Spend disproportionate time on the meeting that frames the work; execution cannot repair a badly framed start.
